Current Issue February 2020 Volume 38, Issue 1 Current Topic February 2020 Aortic Valve Disease Guest Editors: Marie-Annick Clavel, Philippe Pibarot Calcific aortic stenosis (AS) is the most frequent valvular heart disease in high-income countries and the third most frequent cardiovascular disease after hypertension and coronary artery disease. The prevalence of aortic sclerosis (ie, the preclinical stage of AS) is estimated at 25% in the general population older than 65 years and close to 50% in those older than 80 years. The prevalence of AS is less than 1% in the population less than 60 years old, but increases exponentially to more than 10% in elderly people older than 75 years. The prevalence of this disease is expected to triple by 2050 due to population aging. If left untreated, AS is inevitably fatal, and there are currently no pharmacotherapies that can halt or delay its progression. The only available option for the treatment of severe AS is thus aortic valve replacement (AVR) by a prosthetic valve using open heart surgery or transcatheter valve implantation. AS is directly responsible for approximately 20,000 deaths and 150,000 AVR procedures per year in North America.
